Lumberjacking turns trees into logs. You need a hatchet. Every new character starts with a copper one.
How to chop
Click a tree with a hatchet in your pack or hand. Each attempt takes 3 seconds and costs 2 stamina. See How gathering works for the shared rules.

Every log weighs 2 stones.
Yew and emberwood never reach a certain chance, even at 100 skill. At 100, yew is about 85% and emberwood about 58%.
Where to chop
Pine grows mostly on the hills. Oak is everywhere. Ash, yew and emberwood grow deeper in the forest, in that order. See The woods.
Selling logs
Tobin the fletcher on the market square buys every kind of log. Logs aren’t used for crafting yet.
