Skinning

Skinning deer and wolf corpses for hides and pelts, and the chance of a prime hide.

Last updated

This page describes today's playtest build. Values may change during playtests.

Skinning takes hides from the corpses of deer and wolves. You need a skinning knife or a hatchet. Every new character starts with a copper skinning knife.

How to skin

Open a corpse and press Skin, or double-click your knife and then click the corpse. You need to be within 2.6 metres. Each attempt takes 2 seconds and costs no stamina.

A corpse can only be skinned once. If you fail, you can try again. Skinning closes the corpse’s loot window, so take the meat first.

What you get

CorpseLeast skill0% chance at100% chance atHides at skill 0BonusMost
Hind0below 0604 deer hides+1 per 25 skill8
Great hart0below 0606 deer hides+1 per 25 skill10
Grey wolf255over 1001 wolf pelt+1 per 50 skill3

At 100 skill, a wolf skins about 90% of the time.

Prime hides

From 50 skill up, each success has a chance to make the whole stack prime:

prime chance = (skill − 50)%

That’s 25% at 75 and 50% at 100. Prime hides sell for double.

Meat and antlers

Meat isn’t part of skinning. It’s already in the corpse when the animal dies:

  • A great hart has 5 to 7 raw venison and a set of antlers.
  • A hind has 3 to 5 raw venison.
  • A wolf has 2 raw venison.

Selling

Wenna the tanner buys deer hides for 5 (prime 10), wolf pelts for 7 (prime 14), and antlers for 10. Hedda buys raw venison for 6.

Monsters can’t be skinned.
