How gathering works

The rules all four gathering skills share, from reach and swing time to yield, tool wear and regrowth.

Lumberjacking, Mining, Skinning and Foraging all work the same way. This page covers what they share. Each skill has its own page for its materials.

Starting a harvest

  • Click a tree or rock with the right tool in your pack or hand, or double-click a plant.
  • You need to be within 2 metres of it, with nothing in the way, on the ground floor.
  • If you’re already in reach, you start where you stand.
  • A work bar shows the attempt. Moving more than 0.3 metres or attacking cancels it.

Attempt time and stamina

SkillTime per attemptStamina per attempt
Lumberjacking3 s2
Mining3 s3
Foraging2.5 s1
Skinning2 s0

Stamina is spent when the attempt starts. If you don’t have enough, you’re too tired and have to rest. Your stamina doesn’t come back while you keep working.

Success and skill

Each material has a range of skill. At the bottom of the range your chance is 0%. At the top it’s 100%. In between it rises in a straight line. Some materials also have a least skill you need before you can try at all.

You only learn from materials that challenge you. See Skills overview.

Yield

A successful chop, swing or forage gives:

1 + (skill × 9 ÷ 100), rounded down

SkillYield
01
253
505
757
10010

A failed attempt gives nothing. Skinning has its own yields. See Skinning.

Auto-gather

Tick Auto on the work bar to keep working the same tree, rock or plant. It stops when the spot runs dry, when you’re refused, or when you move or do anything else. The box remembers your choice.

Tool wear

Each attempt has a 25% chance to use up one of the tool’s uses.

MetalUsesAbout this many attempts
Copper100400
Iron150600
Silver200800
Cobalt3001,200
Glimmerite4001,600

The metal only changes how long a tool lasts. Copper tools are sold by Hedda and iron tools by Brann.

The land runs out

The world is split into squares 16 metres across. Each square has its own stock of wood, of ore and stone, and of plants. Every success takes its yield from that stock. When it’s empty you’ll see that the trees are cut bare, the rock is worked out, or nothing is ripe.

Stocks grow back slowly on their own:

StockMost a square can holdEmpty to full
Wood120About 25 minutes
Ore and stone150About 15 minutes
Plants90About 8 minutes

Foraging also takes from the grass the deer graze on. See Creatures of Aldermere.
