Lastshard / FAQ
Questions
The things people ask most. If yours isn't here, the wiki may cover it.
The game
Is this Ultima Online?
No. Lastshard is inspired by Ultima Online and the other sandbox worlds of the late ’90s. It is its own game, with its own world, story, code and art, built from scratch. It has no connection to Ultima Online or its owners.
If you played those worlds, a lot will feel familiar: skills that rise by use, full loot, crafting that matters and a world run by its players.
Do I have to fight other players?
Inside guarded towns, no. The guards keep the peace there.
Outside the towns, any player can attack any other, and full loot applies. Murderers pay for it. Their name shows in red, guards hunt them and other players can post bounties. You can stay near town, travel with friends, or take your chances.
What happens when I die?
You wake at your tetherstone. Your body stays where you fell, with everything you were carrying. You can walk back for it, if nobody got there first.
Are there classes or levels?
No. Skills rise as you use them, up to a total cap. To learn something new once you reach the cap, you let an old skill slip. See the world for more.
Are the quests required?
No. There is an optional storyline about why the shards went dark, side quests that pay in special loot and income, and tradeskill quests that buy what crafters make. You can ignore all of it and just live in the world.
Playing
When can I play?
Playtests open in waves during development. Join the playtest list by making an account, and we’ll email you when your wave opens. The server status page shows when a playtest is running.
How much will it cost?
We’ll announce pricing before launch. Playtests are by invitation.
What platforms will it run on?
Today’s pre-alpha build runs on macOS. We’ll say which other platforms we support before wider playtests open.
Is my website account my game login?
Yes. The account name and password you choose here are the ones you use in the game. Once you are invited, the same login works in both places. Your account page shows your characters.
What are the rules?
Fight, steal and scheme in the game as much as you like. Cheating, harassment and selling game items for real money are not allowed. Read the rules of conduct.
Your data
What data do you keep?
Only what the account needs. That is your email address, your account name, a hash of your password (never the password itself), the names of your characters, and IP addresses in security logs for a limited time.
We set one essential cookie to keep you signed in. There are no tracking or advertising cookies, and no analytics. We never sell your data. The privacy notice has the details.
Will you email me?
Only about your account and playtests: confirming your email, password resets and playtest invitations. Our own mail server sends them.
How do I delete my account?
From your account page. Deleting it removes your account and the personal data that goes with it. The privacy notice says what that covers.
