For comparison, a player has 80 hits and runs at 5.0 m/s.

Creatures can’t run forever. Each one has a running budget in metres that refills while it walks or stands. A deer can sprint for about 11 seconds, a wolf for about 28.

Creatures wear no armour. A wounded creature heals 1 hit every 6 seconds once it has been out of a fight for 10 seconds.

Deer and wolves

Deer and wolves live on their own, whether or not anyone is watching.

  • Deer graze the grass of their woods. When they’re well fed they breed.
  • Wolves get hungry over time. A hungry wolf hunts the nearest deer, and nearby wolves join until three are on the same prey.
  • A wolf can run more than twice as far as a deer before it tires. A deer that’s run down turns and fights.
  • When a deer dies, the wolves eat its venison.
  • If a wood runs low on grass, its deer move to a richer one. If they can’t find food, they starve.

At the start the region holds about 28 deer and 9 wolves, split between the east and south woods. There can be at most 50 deer and 14 wolves. When a wood drops below its minimum, newcomers wander in from its edge.

Players are part of this. Hunting deer leaves less for the wolves, and foraging takes grass from the deer. A wolf that gets desperate enough will come for a player standing on a road.

Spawned creatures

Some creatures come from spawners: markers that keep a small group alive in one place. Spawned animals are always fed, never breed and never hunt. They stay near their spawner, and if you drag one too far away it gives up and walks home.

Monsters

Goblins, bandits and trolls ignore the animals, and the animals ignore them. Monsters attack players they can see within 20 metres. When they’re nearly dead and losing, they often run.
