Death and your corpse

What you lose when you die, where you come back, and how long your corpse waits for you.

Last updated

This page describes today's playtest build. Values may change during playtests.

Aldermere has full loot outside town. When you die, almost everything you carry stays on your body for anyone to take.

What happens when you die

  • Your screen darkens and a countdown starts.
  • A corpse with your name appears where you fell.
  • Everything in your pack and everything you wear goes onto the corpse, except newbie items.
  • Your bank box isn’t touched.
  • Any bandage in progress, ability or status effect ends, and you go back to peace mode.

Newbie items stay with you: your starting clothes, your starting dagger and your three starting tools. Your starting gold, pouch and bag are not newbie items.

Coming back

You come back after 5 seconds, with full health and stamina.

The lore says you wake at your tetherstone. There’s no tetherstone in the build yet. Today you come back on the road outside the east gate of Highmarch, the same place new characters start.

The game tells you which way your corpse lies and how far, for example “Your corpse lies 120 m to the south”. A tombstone marks the spot on your minimap and world map. It goes away when you get within 4 metres of it, or when you die again.

While you’re dead, other players can’t see you, and only you can hear what you say.

How long your corpse lasts

A player’s corpse lasts 15 minutes. After that it decays, along with whatever is still in it.

Anyone can open your corpse and take what’s inside. Get back fast, or bring friends.

Creature corpses last 4 minutes. Items dropped on the ground last 15 minutes.

Staying safe

  • Keep your gold and spare gear in the bank.
  • Carry only what you’d be willing to lose.
  • Your newbie tools always come back with you, so you can always earn again.
