Until this week you joined the game by typing a name. Whoever typed that name next got your character. That was fine for me alone. It won’t survive the first playtest.
One account, five lives
You now log in with an account name and a password, or make an account from the login screen. Then you see your five character slots.
Pick an empty slot and you get the creation screen. Name your character, pick a look, and choose three starting skills. You split 100 points between them in steps of 5, with at most 50 in any one. The default is 50 Fencing and 50 Tactics, which suits the dagger you start with.
A 3D preview stands in the middle of the screen. It wears your starting clothes and holds your starting weapon, so you see who you’re making.
What each character keeps
Each character has its own skills, its own pack and its own bank box. Log out and you’re back at the character screen. Restart the server and they’re all still there.
Deleting a character asks you to type its name. That’s on purpose. It takes the pack and the bank box with it, and the name is free for someone else.
Under the hood
Passwords are salted and hashed with PBKDF2, 100,000 rounds. Five wrong guesses close the connection, and an account can only be logged in once at a time.
The website will use the same account. When you sign up for the playtest list here, that’s your game login too.
What it doesn’t do yet
There’s no email recovery inside the game, and no way to rename a character. The website will handle the first. The second can wait.
